Hawaii
September, 2017Beach Camping, Lava Flows, and Poke
Duration: 12 days, 11 nights
Island: O’ahu, Kauai, Hawai’i, HA
Nessa and I headed to Hawaii on our way to our 6 month adventure in Australia. We did a mix of camping and hotel stays which I think allowed us to experience a side of Hawaii that many people don’t. Not only did it help save on costs, but it allowed us to camp on the beach, under the stars, and experience the power of lava! It also prepared us for our future adventure in New Zealand later that year.
O’ahu
Hawaii’s main island. We didn’t stay long enough to see the WHOLE island but we definitely saw everything we wanted to see. I even took a solo trip WAY out west to Disney’s hotel and Pearl Harbor while Nessa was at her cousin’s wedding. While it was the most commercialized, it had the best food of the three islands we visited.
Highlights
- Copious amounts of poke
- Seeing a sea turtle for the first time
- Sheraton Infinite Pool on Waikiki Beach
Kauai
Kauai was my favorite island in terms of beaches and being outdoors. We camped several nights on this island on the beach and in KoKe’e state park. I can hardly describe how amazing it was so I’ll just include this video of the helicopter flying into Jurassic Park.
Highlights
- Camping on a beach
- Beautiful Hikes
- Luxury Resort
Hawai’i
We came here to see a volcano and that is what we did! While there are still plenty of beautiful beaches to lounge on, the highlight of this island was the time we spent exploring Volcanoes National Park. I was almost a huge wimp, but Nessa pushed me out of my comfort zone and got me to hike through the razor sharp lava fields in the dark so that we could see lava up close.
Highlights
- LAVA!
- Camping while the sky was lit by LAVA!
- More LAVA!
