Big Island
June, 2018
Sharp rocks, black sand, and LAVA!
Duration: 4 days, 3 nights
Island: Hawai’i, HA
We came here to see a volcano and that is what we did! While there are still plenty of beautiful beaches to lounge on, the highlight of this island was the time we spent exploring Volcanoes National Park. I was almost a huge wimp, but Nessa pushed me out of my comfort zone and got me to hike through the razor sharp lava fields in the dark so that we could see lava up close.
Things To Do
1. Volcanoes National Park
This is the main attraction of the island and it is hype. Just like in Kauai, I stayed two nights in this park and camped under the auspicious glow of the volcano.
2. Holei Sea Arch
The arch itself was fine, but the drive down was pretty cool. You drive through the park all the way down to the water, and once you get to the end, you have the option to walk to see the lava flows and where they hit the ocean. However, when we went, we were told that the best way to do this was to head to the next location below…
3. See Lava!
You have to drive out of the park and around the island to this area. You park your car and then rent a bike to get to the edge of the ocean where you then walk to see the lava. Not sure if this has changed since all the eruptions, but I recommend renting a bike and doing this near dusk so that you can hike and see the lava in the dark. Bring flashlights, headlamps, hiking boots, and lots of water. I almost wussed out but nessa pushed me to keep hiking in the dark to see lava. IT WAS DOPE.
4. Pololu Valley Lookout
On the other side of the island, there is a cool lookout and cool beach. From what I remember, you won’t regret using your hiking boots to get down to the beach here.
5. Mauna Kea Beach
This beach is tucked into the Mauna Kea hotel area. It’s a bit intimidating going into their complex without being a guest, but you totally can and you totally should.
Best Food & Drink
1. Minnie’s Ohana Lim Style
We didnt really eat at many places here, but one that I remember stopping at on our way to Pololu Valley Lookout was Minnie’s
